Frost The following indications are given (NB its not an
exact science!)
Not frost hardy Probably
severely damaged or killed by any frost – only likely to survive in no-frost
locations, under trees, by houses, hedges, lakes etc.
Partly frost hardy Should
survive some light frosts – how much is hard to predict
Frost hardy Should
survive heavy frosts – however, even the most frost hardy types of plants,
might sometimes succumb (particularly when they are young), to repeated
heavy frosts, or if they are hit by
out-of-season frosts.
Frost hardy when mature – less
when young
This applies to some native trees. In heavy frost areas, it is best to
plant them in spring (say mid September), to try and avoid damage; and/or plant
hardy “nurse” plants several years before the sensitive types.

Cupressocyparis ‘Leighton Green’ |
Leyland Cypress |
Fast, narrow conifer. Dense, good shelter. Tolerates wind, coast, wet or dry, frost hardy. Good sawn timber. Note - can cause abortion if stock eat it. Can get a fungal disease (cypress canker) that can cause parts to die off, make it look unsightly and is sometimes serious enough to stop growth. We still produce it - as there isnt any other high shelter tree that handles harsh, coastal conditions. We recommend only using it for high shelter belts (not low heges) - where some canker should not matter. Also - disease apparently seems much less near the coast. Trimming - if trimmed too hard back (inside the foliage), it might not recover new growth. |
